This annual training programme offers blended learning across eight training days, supported by a dedicated team mentor and access to an online learning hub. The structure allows busy clinical teams to learn flexibly while ensuring that knowledge and skills are translated meaningfully into everyday practice.
The programme engages a wide range of stakeholders in the development and delivery of content to maximise relevance, reach and impact. Service user, family and carer perspectives are embedded throughout, informing training design, delivery, evaluation and quality assurance.
Up to 270 healthcare professionals from teams across England are able to access the training each year, supporting workforce development and strengthening multidisciplinary practice within eating disorder services.

This comprehensive eight day national training programme is designed for multidisciplinary professionals working in adult eating disorder services. Delivered as live online sessions, the course combines expert led teaching, interactive discussion, case based learning and small group work to support high quality, evidence based clinical practice.
The programme strengthens assessment skills, enhances treatment planning, improves risk management and supports services to deliver safe, effective and compassionate care.
Day 1: Setting the Scene
Exploring the foundations of effective eating disorder services, including flourishing teams, patient and carer perspectives, and the changing landscape of eating disorders in the UK. This session establishes a shared understanding of best practice and service challenges.
Day 2: Assessment and Treatment Planning
Developing robust assessment frameworks and collaborative treatment planning. Participants will explore how to engage patients effectively from the outset and work constructively with families and key stakeholders.
Day 3: Medical Health and Risk Management
Enhancing confidence in joint risk assessment and medical management. This session focuses on safe clinical decision making and collaborative working with acute and primary care services to manage physical health risks.
Day 4: Nutrition and Recovery
Supporting individuals to restore nutrition and rebuild a healthy relationship with food. This day considers physiological, behavioural and psychological aspects of nutritional rehabilitation within evidence based treatment models.
Day 5: Psychological Treatments
Reviewing current evidence based psychological therapies for eating disorders and understanding what works, for whom. Participants will explore how to optimise treatment delivery and improve engagement and outcomes.
Day 6: Family, Medical and Social Interventions
Examining broader treatment approaches, including family involvement, medical input and social interventions. The focus is on integrating multidisciplinary care within cohesive service pathways.
Day 7: Managing Complex and High Risk Presentations
Addressing the clinical and ethical challenges of working with patients who are difficult to engage or respond to treatment. Topics include duty of care, rehabilitation strategies and application of the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Day 8: Innovative Treatment and Service Models
Exploring emerging treatment approaches and service innovations. Participants will reflect on adapting to evolving service demands while maintaining clinical excellence and patient centred care.

Eligibility Criteria and Expectations
Individual Training Participants
The EDSA WTT programme is aimed at specialist community practitioners and those working across the patient pathway, including referring and inpatient services. We are pleased to enrol anyone working clinically with adults with eating disorders in these settings within the NHS, regardless of level of seniority, professional background, or training.
This includes, but is not limited to: psychiatrists, physicians, nurses, clinical and counselling psychologists, family therapists, psychotherapists, arts and creative therapists, dietitians, occupational therapists, and peer workers.
Considerations for Service Leads and Teams
This programme is repeated annually over four years. Please consider what combination of professional groups and levels of seniority, and how many team members, you may wish to release for the training each year.
Smaller teams may wish to attend together, while larger teams may prefer to send a few participants each year. Please also consider proposing senior members of your team, including yourself, to serve as mentors, as individuals or teams will be paired.
Expectations of Participants
In order to gain the most from the training, we ask course participants to sign a training contract committing to:

Attending all eight training days, rather than dipping in and out, and participating for the full day.

Making time for required course reading, homework, between session reflection, and engagement with peers and mentors.

Reflecting within their team and service on how learning can be translated into tangible action to improve the service and optimise patient care.

Notifying the training team of any unavoidable absences.
Expectations of Service Leads and Teams
To enable your team to gain maximum benefit from the training, we ask you to sign a training contract committing to:

Releasing staff to attend all eight training days and managing associated service pressures.

Supporting participants to make time for required course reading, homework, between session reflection, and engagement with peers and mentors.

Supporting your team and service to reflect on their learning and translate this into tangible action to optimise patient care.

Supporting your team to engage with the training programme throughout the four years, for example by accessing the online learning hub.

Attending two meetings with mentors prior to the commencement of the training.
Course Certification
Upon completion of the course, participants will receive CPD certification of attendance and topics covered, based on confirmed attendance and use of the online learning materials.
To obtain a certificate, participants must attend at least seven of the eight training days.
