About the course

This full day course is designed for multi professionals working with young people, particularly those enrolled in the MSc in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. The course focuses on the assessment and classification of mental illness in children and adolescents, as well as preventative approaches that support positive mental wellbeing. It also explores the important role of the young person’s family and wider support network in promoting mental health, highlighting both the challenges and benefits of collaborative working in clinical practice.

Participants will take part in a series of simulated scenarios involving professional actors, followed by structured debrief sessions facilitated by experienced trainers. These sessions provide an opportunity to strengthen both technical and non technical skills, develop clinical confidence, and reflect on real world clinical situations. By the end of the course, participants will improve their understanding of assessing mental health in young people, identifying signs of mental illness, responding appropriately to risk, recognising the connections between physical and mental health, and working effectively with families and support networks.

Learning objectives

Participants will:

  • Enhance their knowledge of the assessment and classification of mental illness in children and young people.
  • Develop the ability to identify and respond to signs of poor mental health.
  • Understand the importance of risk assessment and the key steps involved in safeguarding.
  • Reflect on the challenges and benefits of working with service users’ families and support networks and develop effective approaches to collaborative practice.
