Student mental health skills for academics and tutors
It is estimated that one in four university students will experience mental illness and students are increasingly speaking to student support services and faculty members about their mental health concerns. The recent increase in suicides amongst university students has brought the duty of care faced by universities into focus and many institutions are seeking to make positive changes towards providing holistic care to their students.
This one-day Maudsley Masterclass is aimed at university faculty, personal tutors, and mentors, and will provide an overview of mental health and behavioural issues commonly encountered in students. The course has been developed in response to the 2018 Student Minds report on the role of academics in student mental health and is designed to provide staff with practical approaches to deal with the complex and challenging issues they face. Instead of focusing on the clinical aspects of a range mental health conditions, this course will use several clinical cases to introduce new skills, accompanied by brief didactic sessions.
Using realistic video case-based scenarios and interactive learning, this course provides a dynamic and engaging learning experience for those wishing to improve their knowledge and confidence in dealing with mental health concerns. There will be opportunity for discussion around the cases, facilitated by our expert clinical tutors.

- Identify when a student is experiencing a mental health problem that requires support
- Support wellbeing and help-seeking in students experiencing a mental health problem
- Set boundaries with regards to their role in supporting students in difficulty
- Identify when and where students should be signposted
- Respond to students in distress or disclosing trauma
