Maudsley Learning is part of the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, which has the only inpatient neuropsychiatry unit in England. The course will be led by Pospo (Sotiris Posporelis), a Consultant Liaison Neuropsychiatrist at King’s College Hospital London and a Hon. Clinical Senior Lecturer at the IoPPN. How do you become a neuropsychiatrist in the UK?
Before becoming a neuropsychiatrist, candidates typically have training posts at a CT level in neurology and psychiatry. Then, they have ST posts in neuropsychiatry or liaison psychiatry. Alongside this, they may undertake placements with neuropsychiatry services, complete a neuropsychiatry course like this one or do an MSc.
What does a neuropsychiatrist do?
Neuropsychiatrists work with patients that have mental disorders originating from problems in the nervous system. They treat mental disorders from brain injuries and also study the brain. It’s a role that combines elements of neurology and psychiatry.
What is the difference between a neuropsychologist and neuropsychiatrist?
A neurologist treats the physical manifestations of diseases in the nervous system, whereas neuropsychiatrists treat the mental manifestations. Neurologists deal with memory, movement and pain, for example, whereas neuropsychiatrists deal with mood, emotions and thoughts.
