Learning objectives
By the end of this course, participants will:
- Be able to demonstrate increased knowledge and understanding of schizophrenia and how it presents, including its core symptoms, heterogeneity, and diagnostic features.
- Be able to demonstrate increased knowledge and understanding of common predisposing and precipitating factors associated with the development of schizophrenia.
- Have developed an awareness of the psychosocial challenges associated with schizophrenia, including their impact on patients and carers, barriers to healthcare, unmet needs, health inequalities, stigma, and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) considerations.
- Be able to demonstrate increased knowledge and understanding of the overlap between physical and mental health in schizophrenia, including premature mortality, diagnostic overshadowing, and morbidity.
- Have developed increased awareness and understanding of the economic and wider social impact of schizophrenia.
- Have developed increased awareness of the patient experience of schizophrenia, treatment, and navigating mental health services through an interactive session with a lived experience practitioner.
- Report increased understanding of biopsychosocial treatment approaches for schizophrenia, factors influencing treatment decisions, and common reasons for treatment non-adherence and relapse.
- Have developed increased understanding of NHS care pathways for schizophrenia, including the patient journey from early intervention services to rehabilitation.
- Feel confident in identifying and discussing key system-level challenges that impact the delivery of schizophrenia care within the NHS.
