Learning objectives
After completing the course, those attending will have enhanced understanding, knowledge and skills surrounding:
- Language use, aspects of attentive listening, de-escalation models, and the use of assertive communication techniques.
- Taking a trauma-informed approach to consultations, including recognising signs of dysregulation and the use of grounding techniques within a consultation.
- Grief models, including the Dual Process Model, 'Growing Around Grief', and how these may support conversations around death and dying.
- Recognising signs of mental health deterioration alongside physical illness and approaches to responding effectively to this, including risk assessment.
- Working effectively with colleagues in multidisciplinary teams and across multi-agency working.
- Understanding and managing heightened emotions in a partner or carer and considering options for partner/carer support.
- Providing support to themselves and healthcare colleagues around their own wellbeing following challenging consultations, including reflecting on, but not limited to, the role of vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and moral injury.
