Course overview

The Maudsley Learning Virtual Reality Champions Training programme offers learners a unique opportunity to receive specialised content coaching, debriefing sessions, and technology training that they can later apply flexibly in their workplace to train their teams.

Our 360-degree virtual reality content immerses users in various scenarios, providing them with distinctive perspectives. This mirrors real-life experiences where individuals often have different viewpoints of the same situation, influenced by what they see and, intriguingly, what they do not see. This training amalgamates these diverse perspectives, drawing from established evidence in bystander training, to encourage learners to reflect on their own perspectives regarding challenging topics within a psychologically safe learning environment.

About the course

This one-day course is currently available online as part of a train-the-trainer model, complemented by supplementary e-learning resources, peer support from our existing champions network, and guidance on the most effective ways to integrate it into your clinical setting. We also offer this training as faculty-led debrief sessions. It is suitable for all healthcare staff, both clinical and non-clinical, and is applicable to acute and mental health trusts.

We provide virtual reality headsets for learners, making the training easy to implement without the need for additional equipment setup. The current course focuses on de-escalation training, while previous iterations centered around addressing racial inequality in healthcare.

Please note that enrollment in this course is currently funded by the Knowledge Asset Grant, and you must receive approval from our team to be eligible. If you are interested in joining a waitlist for future courses of this nature or inquiring about running this training for your team, please contact Helen.Welsh@slam.nhs.uk for more information.
