Learning objective
By the end of the simulation course, physician associates will:
- Build on knowledge from e-learning of broad categories of psychiatric illness and common mental health presentations.
- Elicit a full psychiatric history and Mental State Examination and suggest differential diagnosis.
- Recognise psychiatric emergencies, assess and manage mental health risks, and know when and how to escalate.
- Use de-escalation models and strategies to engage with and support those who are in mental distress.
- Communicate confidently and empathetically with confused, distressed, or agitated service users.
- Support service users with symptoms and co-morbid presentations, bridging the interface between physical and mental illness, including long-term conditions.
- Understand and apply any relevant legal frameworks, including the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
- Consider signposting options and communicate referrals appropriately.
