About the course

The transition from CAMHS services to adult mental health care poses a significant challenge for patients, carers, and professionals. Unfortunately, these transitions are often poorly managed by services, resulting in avoidable anxiety and adverse experiences for service users. This challenge is particularly pronounced for patients with autism, as transitions can be extremely distressing. Therefore, careful consideration and planning are essential to ensure continuity of care. Additionally, there is a lack of clarity, both for professionals and service users, regarding available and appropriate resources for individuals with autism.

These courses are designed to demystify autism for professionals working in both CAMHS and adult mental health settings. They aim to introduce strategies that can enhance the way teams manage transitions and the overall care of individuals with autism. The ultimate goal is to improve the understanding and support provided during these critical periods.

Moreover, practitioners participating in these courses will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge they've gained in realistic scenarios, fostering practical skills and enhancing their ability to navigate challenges in their respective roles.

Learning objectives
  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of autism from both a clinical perspective and through the lens of an autistic person’s lived experience.

  • Apply person-centered strategies effectively to provide tailored support for individuals with autism within mental health settings.

  • Address and alleviate the challenges encountered by autistic individuals during the transition from childhood to adulthood, fostering a smoother and more supportive process.

  • Implement practical strategies aimed at enhancing the care of co-morbid mental and physical illnesses in individuals with autism, ensuring a holistic approach to their well-being.
