The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS) have become a core part of practice in hospital and community settings. This one-day course for medical and nursing professionals covers the philosophical and legal underpinnings of the MCA, latest research in mental capacity, and core skills required for capacity-related decision-making. The role of DoLS will also be covered.

  • Describe the philosophical underpinnings of mental capacity and decision-making
  • Describe the role of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards legislation, and identify when they apply
  • Make a capacity assessment in accordance with Act
  • Formulate an action plan following capacity assessment in accordance with the principles of the Act
