About the course

This one-day course is suitable for a range of professionals involved in the care of patients with dementia, including nurses, clinical support workers, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, psychologists, and general practitioners. Participants will be involved in a series of simulated scenarios focusing on the assessment and management of behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSDs). Learners will work together to build skills and confidence in the early recognition and management of these symptoms.

Learning Objectives

What you will learn from taking this course:

  • Have improved skills and feel more confident in the recognising and assessing behaviour that challenges in older adults.
  • Feel more confident in the practical and safe management of agitation and other challenging behaviours.
  • Develop skills in working as a team to more effectively manage behaviour that challenges as well as identifying issues around leadership and communication which impact on how teams function successfully.
  • Be able to foster care and compassion in the acute medical environment.
  • Demonstrate improved confidence, knowledge and skills in the assessment and management of BPSDs.
  • Understand the role non-technical skills, e.g. situational awareness, leadership and team working, play in both psychiatric and medical emergencies and reflect upon individual capabilities.
  • Describe when and why safe, high quality clinical care fails to be delivered.
  • Demonstrate greater confidence in working as a team or leading a team in the management of challenging behaviour with patients with dementia.
  • Understand their role in challenging situations and demonstrate knowledge of escalation protocols.
